STATEMENT
OF SUPPORT and news letter
YERINGTON ANIMAL SHELTER
We, YAPS, support the Yerington Animal Shelter and their efforts to place adoptable dogs in suitable homes.
To that end we:
Encourage our members to volunteer at Yerington Animal Shelter.
Ensure all dogs are altered before they are put up for adoption. The exception is puppies less than 4 months old. People adopting puppies will be given a YAPS voucher for a no cost alteration for that puppy.
Remain available to provide financial support on an individual case basis.
Co-operate and partner with the volunteers in events and programs such as:
Educational booths
Holiday Angel Tree for Local Pets
Low cost vaccination clinics
Food bank for local pets.
Fund raising events as appropriate
Maintain an active presence on the Yerington Animal Control Committee, working with all parties to provide the best possible solutions to animal related issues. Maintain a respectful and gracious interface with the Yerington Animal Shelter volunteers.
Make all reasonable efforts to ensure the public understands the different purposes of the two groups. Especially we must be very clear when fundraising that money given to YAPS is not used for the general operations of the shelter.

WINTER 2011 NEWSLETTER
2010- WHAT A YEAR!
YAPS had a really terrific year in 2010. We accomplished more than ever – just look at the numbers!
Pets spayed/neutered 298
(239 in 2009)
Feral Cats 101
(44 in 2009)
Shelter dogs – 37
(27 in 2009)
All this costs a
great deal of money – and we spent more than we took in.
Thankfully, we had the extra money in the bank. The difference
equaled the amount we got in 2009 as a grant from
PetCo. It looks
like we will not get grants from them again (see article below) so we
will need to address fundraising in 2011 – as always!
The YAPS
sponsored events were better this year as well. LAPS for YAPS, Pet
Portraits with Santa, the Angel Tree for Local Pets were all much
more successful than ever.
The Yerington City Animal Shelter and the volunteers there had a truly spectacular year in 2010. They handled 84 city dogs with 41 adoptions, 24 returned to their owners, 6 sent to other rescues, and 5 put down due to illness, injury or aggression.
SHELTER IMPROVEMENTS
The Shelter also saw a very long list of improvements in 2010 – drive by and take a look. You will be amazed! The roof was replaced, the perimeter fence was put up around the entire facility, the exercise/ get acquainted area is now grass and trees, the parking lot was re-done, the turn out kennels are concrete, and more.
The list is long and impressive. There were some significant donations made by citizens for shelter upgrades, and the City was able to get sod and some fencing recycled from the soccer field. The City provided all the labor, which really made the money go so much farther.
Just a really pleasant environment now. We congratulate all involved.
If you are interested in making a donation to the shelter talk to Peggy at 463-6578. She can tell you how to ensure your money goes to the shelter.
Dog walkers are always needed, as well as volunteers to work in the office, and to work with the dogs. Call 46306578 to find out more.
WEBPAGE UPDATE

EVENTS FOR 2011
The calendar for 2011 is attached. Once again we are scheduling the LAPS for YAPS, Portraits with Santa, Angel Tree for Local Pets and booths at many local events.
In addition the
new event is the Great Yerington Yard Sale. YAPS’s Great Yerington
Yard Sale will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2011. It will be in
conjunction with the Arts and Blues at
the Center / A Taste of the
Valley at the Jeanne Dini Cultural Center. See article below.
FUNDRAISING’
Grants are getting hard to come by, and we are searching for additional places to apply. Anyone with computer skills willing to help, please call Diane on 463-3699.
LAPS for YAPS is our signature event, and we are interested in ideas to make this event bigger and better – and more profitable. Call Carol on 463-2816 with ideas.
GREAT YERINGTON YARD SALE
The GYYS is a coordinated effort to have yard sales all over the area on the same day. People will drive distances to attend an event like this. All across the US there are very successful events like this. People will drive long distances to attend.
YAPS will be maintaining the website and advertising the event as well as managing a central yard sale location with booths for the vendors. However, it is expected that most of the yard/garage sales will be held at homes through out the area.
All registered
vendors and vendors renting booth space will be listed on the YAPS
Great Yerington Yard Sale web site along with hours their sale will
be open, list of sale items, and notations
requested by
the vendors.
They will also be included on the map provided to shoppers on line
and paper copy the day of the event.
CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE
YAPS wishes to thank the local veterinarians for their continued cooperation. They give us a good discount on the feral cats and shelter dogs.
AND we need to make everyone aware that on the half price vouchers – YAPS pays 25% and the vets discount 25%. That leaves the 50% for the owner. Each owner needs to be reminded to thank the vet for the discount!
