Summer 2010 NEWSLETTER

2010 SO FAR

YAPS has had fewer events this year, but without doing any less public good.

As of the end of June, we have assisted with 173 spay/neuter operations. That breaks down to 70 dogs,53 cats, 36 feral cats, and 12 shelter dogs.

Our big event was the Third Annual LAPS for YAPS held June 12 at the Cottonwood Ranch. In spite of flooding that caused last minute changes in the race route, it was a great success! We had more racers and made more money than ever! Our thanks and appreciation go to race coordinator Carol Fuller who works year round on this.

This event is growing and more people are becoming aware of it and us. This year we targeted advertising in Lyon County, Reno and Carson City. Hopefully, we can expand that next year.

YAPS assisted the shelter with Yerington Animal Hospitals low cost vaccination clinic, and we held a couple booths at local events.

TRAILS AND TAILS QUILT

Any one having an old Trails for Tails tee shirt or sweat shirt, please let Gale (463-4197) know. Claudia at the Workshop in the Back is making a quilt for YAPS and needs as many logos as possible.

 LYON COUNTY FAIR

The Lyon County Fair is coming up quickly! August 19 through 22. We will be raffling a Magellan RoadMate GPS system, with a voice guidance system, 4.3” color touch screen display. The system comes loaded with maps for US, Canada and Puerto Rico. There are loads of other great features! We also have a Blu-Ray player and other great items. Tickets will sell for the usual rates ($1 each, 6 for $5 and 25 for $20.

The prizes will be awarded at the end of the fair. Between now and then, we will be having a table at Scolari’s to sell tickets. Anyone wanting to help, please let Diane know. Scheduling is very flexible!

We will also be selling donated items – some are left from the raffle at LAPS for YAPS and others are new. Diane will be calling to finalize the schedule for staffing the booth – if you have time available, please call her (463-3699) to volunteer!

FRIENDSHIP FUND

The Scolari’s Friendship Fund is our largest source of funding now. At all of the booths the fair, etc., we will be signing people up for it.

Please check with your friends and family to see that all of them have their FF $ allotted. If not, please have them fill out a form right away!

NEW OFFICERS AND BOARD MEMBERS

YAPS elections were held in June and the results are as follows:

President – Diane Davis

Vice President – Gale Gianoplos

Secretary – Claire Daniels

Treasurer – Martha Diehl

Board Members at Large – Penny Fowler, Rebecca Dalske, Cheryl Hockaday

We thank Donna Votaw as retiring Vice President and congratulate Gale G as the new vice-president.

We welcome Cheryl Hockaday as a new Board Member at Large.

NEW MEMBERS AND SUPPORTERS

We have signed up several new members and supporters. YAPS welcomes:

Denise Aiazzi, Nadia Baratti, Kathy Bartels, Debbie Dibble, Valerie A Salet-Breckenridge, Patricia Shirrell. We also welcome Peggy Hibsch a long time supporter now a real member!

BEVERAGE CANS

We are getting reasonable money for the beverage cans we collect now. And we are going to be collecting cans at the Lyon County Fair. There will be lettering on the collection drums stating beverage cans only and that this benefits the spay/neuter programs.

Anyone willing to volunteer to check the cans at the fair – empty when full, and install fresh liners – please contact Diane at 463-3699.

Please consider other venues where we might collect cans! At the Rocking Rods Car Show thousands of cans were just out into regular trash!

 2010 FALL FESTIVAL

The board decided it was more effective use of our energy to have booths at many events rather than trying to host one fall event on our own.

Dini’s Fall Festival is October 29, and we want to make a good showing there.

We plan to attend the Smith Rotary Car Show in October (and yes we can have a raffle there!), the St Anne’s Bazaar in November, and whatever else there is. If you know of other events, please contact Diane on 463-3699.

DONATIONS AND RAFFLE ITEMS

Information booths raise our profile in the area, but we make money when we have items to raffle and sell. However, we need to be very careful about exhausting our donors.

If you have items to donate - and craft items are very welcome! – pleased call Cheryl on 463-1850.

We need ideas on what else we can do. I keep coming back to putting together a cookbook of favorite recipes for humans and pets. Anyone else have ideas?

PET PORTRAITS WITH SANTA

Pet Portraits with Santa will be Saturday, December 4, 2010. With Kritter Kafe closed, we are not sure where this should be held. It needs to be in town, at a visible location. That means folks driving through town should be able to see it. Of course, we need parking and inside space to develop the pictures.
