SPRING 2010 NEWSLETTER

2009 REVIEW

WOW! 2009 was a busy and very productive year for YAPS! We assisted spaying/neutering 227 pets, and 44 feral cats. We do not have figures for how many shelter dogs we had altered, but the numbers are impressive.

That means we were fundraising almost constantly. Many of our events involved nasty weather, but you all came out and made it work anyway. THANK YOU ALL!

Our efforts were successful as we ended the year at a break even point. To hold our own in this economy is a real achievement and we should all be proud.

Details are available on request – just call me on 463-3699.

SHELTER FIGURES – AMAZING

The Yerington Animal Shelter had a terrific year. The volunteers put in just shy of 2000 volunteer hours. I am always impressed with the dedication and level of involvement of the volunteers there.

Once again, no dogs were destroyed due to lack of space or because ‘their time ran out.’ This has become a ‘no kill’ shelter due to the efforts of the volunteer crew there – and we all thank them!

NEW MEMBER

We have a number of new members in 2009 – one a new one already in 2010. We certainly welcome Donna Gard, and look forward to working with her.

PLANS FO5R 2010

Mark your calendars for the following dates – these are the events where we will need EVERYBODY to make them work.

June 12 LAPS FOR YAPS. This will be at the Cottonwood Ranch again.

August 20-22 LYON COUNTY FAIR. We will have a booth, details to be decided later.

September 18 WELCOME TO FALL EVENT. This is similar to the End of Season Event we held last October. We hope to have booths for vendors, crafts, and rummage.

December 4 – SANTA PET PORTRAITS

This is always a fun event – but let’s all hope for better weather!

There will probably be other smaller events – like booths at the Fourth of July. More on that during the year.

Don’t forget to mark the regular MONTHLY functions on your calendars –

FIRST Saturday – Spay/Neuter Voucher hand out

SECOND Tuesday – Regular meeting

SECOND Thursday – Pizza FUNdraiser at Round Table.

PIZZA FUNDRAISER CONTINUES

Every second Thursday, Round Table hosts the Pizza FUNdraiser to benefit YAPS. We hand out certificates, and for every one of them turned in that night with an order, we get the equivalent of 20% of the order. Certainly a VERY good deal for us! Thank you Round Table!

ANGEL TREE FOR LOCAL PETS

This was a new effort, and turned out to be a smashing success! We were able to help 20 families who needed assistance with pet food, and basic pet supplies. The donations just poured into Kritter Kafe!

Making the deliveries was fun, but it really hits home how difficult a financial time it really is!

Hopefully, we will be able to do this again! I certainly volunteer for it.

LAPS FOR YAPS

This is our signature event, and the one that requires the most effort. All of us need to solicit businesses to sponsor the event – any donations over $100 is a sponsorship. All of us are also responsible to gathering raffle prizes.

Please plan to help with at least one of the following committees. Contact the lead person as soon as possible.

Raffle – Jean C. 463-3332This is storing, organizing, presenting the raffle items as well as handling ticket sales

Pre-Race Snacks – Gale G. 463-4197 We provide cookies, and fruit. We need donations from the local businesses and members.

Lunch – Round Table Pizza to provide

Administration of Race – Carol F. 463-2618. This is a large job and entails everything from making and sending out registration forms, setting up the course, actual timing of the racers.

Advertising – Diane D. 463-3699

This includes placing ads and stories in the media, putting up flyers (everywhere), soliciting discounts from local businesses for race participants: ie- hotels, meals, pet boarding.

CHANGES IN VOUCHER PROGRAM

In 2010, we will be making some changes to the voucher hand out day. We will be issuing vouchers to everyone who comes between 11 AM and noon. There will be no vouchers handed out between times.

If a person can not make the hand out times, they should have a someone go for them. If that is not possible, they should call in advance to see what can be arranged. Diane on 463-3699, Martha on 463-7813 or Gale on 463-4197.

The number of people calling between times has been increasing, and that is not fair to the folks who come and follow the plan. We will have enough vouchers available for everyone who comes, but no additional.

THANKS TO EVERYONE

The members and officers of YAPS are wonderful, dedicated, focused people. That’s why this group is so successful.

Special thanks go to Martha Diehl our treasurer – her reports are so easy to understand, and the job is never easy. Thanks go to our secretary Claire Daniels for all the copying and printing, she has provided us with literally thousands of pages of printed material through out the year. Thanks go to Gale Gianoplos for managing the voucher hand out program. And to Carol Fuller for extreme effort in single handedly presenting the LAPS for YAPS 2009.

And thanks to all the members and volunteers that showed up at events and suffered through cold, wind, etc.

It’s an honor to deal with such wonderful people. Thanks to all!
